I need to know the name of an old black and white movie?

I saw it as a kid on TV years ago, and it was about a dog that gets left a load of money by the dogs eccentric owner. She entrusts her maid to look after the dog, but thugs poison and kill the dog. The dog then goes to animal heaven, but asks to go back to earth to protect the maid. The dogs wish is granted and gets to go back, but as a human private eye.


The private eye still has dog behaviour. It was an old black and white comedy, and I would love to buy it on DVD (if it is available).


But I would mainly love to know what it was called, as I have never seen it again, and it has bugged me for years what it was called.

I remember seeing it too. The one scene that I remember was the blond lady friend of the returned dog running after a bus and you could hear the sound of a horse galloping. She was supposed to have once been a horse and the dog met her in the 'heaven' and she came back down to earth with him. Fun film.
