Quick! What a good name for a maid?! And is Sarah a good name for a little girl?

I'm writing a fairy tale like story and l need to know what names would be good for a maid, and I also need opinions on these names:

Sarah: The little girl and the main character of the story

I've used this name in my stories before, should I find something else?

William: A young man and a sort of main character

Do you think this name has been overused in stories?

Gremswort: A grumpy old butler

Should that be a first name or a last?

And I need names for three more people:

The little girls mother

An enchantress (a main character)

And a lord who lives in a golden palace (Main character)

I don't have that many not-main characters yet.

Thank you for your opinions!

Call the maid Tilly Pigsfoot or Kitty Drainspout.
Reply:Please give the phone directory a try!

When I needed names and looked through the directory, I couldn't believe all the great names that I never would have thought of! It was amazing and wonderful to have so many names, both first AND last, all in one place!

Happy writing!

Reply:I think that both Sarah and William are highly overused. You can always make something up. As for the Butler, why not just stick with Gremswort and leave it a mystery whether it is his first or last name......maybe for a maid something fairly common (ones that come to mind include Sara, Martha, Corrine, Colleen, Jenny, Maria...etc) The girl's mother should have a name that hints towards her standing. For example: Elizabeth sounds more regal and noble than Helen. Something that plays with the tongue a bit is good too, like Moira or Angela (they aren't used that often so they are interesting choices). As for a lord's name....why not dive into some mythology or other works of fiction for something and use your imagination to bend the rest. You came up with the butler's name which is cute....now think noble and whether he is harsh or cruel or nice...and then think of what flys off the tongue best. Or, find words that have to do with gold. The enchantress bit is almost the same as the mother. The names should fit the personality and standing. Is the enchantress a tall, beautiful fairy creature or is she a bent, wizened old woman who lives in a forest cottage?

Good luck!
Reply:Sarah and William have been used before, but you can use them. They work well in fairy tales.

Gremswort should be his last name, but everyone still calls him by it.

Little girl's mom: Willow

Enchantress: Vistrella

Lord: Cairo

:) It sounds good so far. Good luck!
Reply:I think the little girl should be named Sadie or Macy, maybe Darcy. They sound fairy tale-ish.

As far as the maid, I would use something you can shorten to a nickname. Like Samantha or Jacqueline.

Mother-Kara, Cleo?

Enchantress-Laurel

Lord-Arthur, Viggo, Christoph

Hope I helped!
Reply:This isn't really a real answer, but I suggest checking out the message boards on www.behindthename.com. They have a board pretty much dedicated to this sort of thing and there's a lot of people on there who really know what they're talking about with the history and meanings of names.
