Whats the meaning of "old maids on bicycles and cricketers playing on the village green"? explain.?

It's a fanciful picture of English village life in a time that never existed in reality. Of course, single ladies do ride bikes, and cricket is still played on village greens. I think it comes from a speech by the former Conservative leader, John Major.
