I don't know about a book, but that's the EXACT story line of "Imitation of Life", which is a movie that had..... oh god, I think it was Sandra Dee and.... can't remember the rest. And yes, I just yahooed it and it is also a novel by the same name. There were two film versions, one in 1934, the other in 1959, with Lana Turner.

This link has copies for sale on DVD of the 1959 version.

The title of the novel is "Imitation of Life" by Fannie Hurst.

I have no idea if the movie was based on a book, Irene Cara starred in the movie. I think it was in the late 1970's.

Reply:I'm pretty sure that's the book called Pinky. It was also made into a movie in 1949...pretty progressive for that time, eh? Funny that this question should pop up...I just saw an interview with Jeanne Crain, the actress who played Pinky last weekend on TV.
